What’s this coconut oil hype about?

So together with Banting, CrossFit and Pumpkin Spice, we’ve been hearing a lot about coconut oil lately, but what is the hype all about? At first I was only using it for cooking purposes, but soon I realized that more and more people were using it for various things. So I did some research, and decided to test some of these uses out! According to research coconut oil has a multitude of benefits, and when I say “multitude” I really mean it, these benefits include health care, skin care, hair care etc. During my research I found more than 200 benefits for using coconut oil. I won’t list all of them, but I made a compacted list of benefits that I feel applies to ladies my age. So here it is:

  • Skin care

    Coconut oil is an effective moisturizer on all types of skin, including dry skin. It also delays the appearance of wrinkles (yay!). It also helps in treating various skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and others skin conditions. My skin is looking a lot better since I’ve started using coconut oil.

  • Hair care

    Coconut oil enhances the growth of hair, and also helps to leave your hair nice and shiny. It’s also highly effective in reducing protein loss, which can leave your hair in a gross and unhealthy state. It is an excellent conditioner and helps the healing process of damaged hair. It also provides essential proteins required for nourishing and healing damaged hair.


  • Weight loss

    Yip, it really does. Coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids that helps your body get rid of excessive fat. Research suggests that coconut oil helps to reduce abdominal obesity in women. It’s also easy to digest and it increases the body’s metabolic rate by removing stress on the pancreas, thereby burning more energy and helping overweight people lose weight.

  • Stress relief

    With many of you currently writing exams and feeling the stress of being a student or young working professional, or even both in some of the cases, the stress can become unbearable, and sometimes even lead to burnout (read my post You can’t pour from an empty cup to find out about burnout). Cocnut oil has soothing elements, so when applied to your head and gently massaged, it can relieve stress and mental fatigue.

  • Dental Care

    Coconut oil doesn’t only whiten our teeth (that’s enough reason already!) but it also restores calcium and it stops tooth decay as well.

  • Health

    Due to coconut oil extracting abilities when it comes to toxins, it also has the ability to heal infections, rashes, wounds and more. Coconut oil forms a chemical layer that protects the infected part from external bacteria and viruses. Coconut oil is highly effective on wounds because it speeds up the healing process of damaged tissues.


  • Other benefits

    • Promotes heart health
    • Supports proper thyroid function
    • Strengthens immune system
    • Promotes healthy brain function
    • Provides fuel for your body to support a strong metabolism.

Apart from all these various benefits, there’s hundreds of things you can do with coconut oil. When you read about all these things you can use it for, you realize how much money you can save, how easy it is to replace your commercial products with an organic one, and how easy it is to change your lifestyle to a healthier one.

For you:

Body scrub: Mix equal parts coconut oil with organic cane sugar. Use the scrub on dry skin prior to your shower.

Facial scrub: Instead of sugar, mix coconut oil with baking soda or oatmeal with a pinch of cinnamon, for a gentle facial scrub.

Shaving lotion: Apply a thin layer of coconut oil, and shave as usual. The coconut oil will also serve as an antiseptic for any cuts.

Cuticle cream: Simply rub a small amount of coconut oil around your cuticles.

Deodorant: Applying a small amount of coconut oil directly onto your armpits can help keep odors at bay, courtesy of the oil’s antibacterial properties.

Bath soak: Adding coconut oil to your bath can help moisturize dry and irritated skin (Make sure to scrub your tub afterward to prevent slipping).

Around the house: 

  • Cleaning and sanitizing your wooden cutting board.
  • Moisturize and soften leather items as you would using other leather conditioners, just test in on a small part first!
  • Lubricate squeaky hinges.
  • Lubricate your guitar strings.
  • Clean soap scum from your shower using a small bit of coconut oil on a damp cloth. Spray the area with white vinegar and wipe dry with a cloth.
  • Clean your hands and paint brushes with coconut oil after using oil-based paints. This tip changed my life! I always had hardened paint brushed laying around, not anymore!

I can go on for hours about the benefits and uses of coconut oil, but it all comes down to the fact that a great natural product has been under our noses all along. And when in doubt, use coconut oil. It’s amazing to read about all the amazing things that coconut oil contains, and all the health benefits it has for us.
