14 healthy habits every girl should have

So lately I’ve been in survival mode, living off smoothies and pizza and anything that was quick and easy. About 2 weeks ago, my husband and I had a talk about our lifestyle and decided to make a few changes, and it all started with a hike up Helderberg. It was great, and we feel inspired to live a healthy and better organised lifestyle again.

So I did a little research and really thought about this, and found some valuable tips for creating healthy and useful habits in our everyday lives, and i’d love to share them with you!

1. Start everyday fresh

All of us have been there where you start your diet or gym program every Monday, and when I skipped Monday, I’ll wait till next Monday before starting. But I need to change that. Begin everyday new, try again until you have established that habit. Forget about the stress and failures of yesterday and start new.

2. Stop working at 7pm

This includes any type of work. Women have this habit of never switching off, we’ll finish work, get home, and start doing the washing and cleaning and organising. Force yourself to stop working at 7pm. You’ll have more energy to get up early and get everything done, so you can relax in the evening.

3. Understand that exercise doesn’t have to be a time consuming commitment

I often skip exercise because I check my watch and tell myself that I don’t have time to exercise. But doing a few squats and pushups before jumping in the shower is a great way to create the habit of being active daily. Every little bit counts. Especially if you have a desk job. Plank for a minute or two and challenge yourself to increase that time. Set goals for yourself, making interesting to keep you motivated.

4. Cut back on bad sugar

Oh my oh my, I’m preaching to myself here. I absolutely love soda drinks, and I’ll have a perfect meal plan, but I struggle to resist sodas (my husband keeps me in check though, sad face). My solution is Sparkling water, the fizzy taste helps me to control the cravings. Find ways to replace your cravings with a healthier alternative.

5. Don’t try to keep up with the Jonses

You’ll lose. Accept where you are in your life, and accept that everyone is on a different path. Yours might be a little slower or a little faster, but where you are, is perfectly okey. Do not compare yourself with others. You’re perfect, because it’s your life and you’re actively working on yourself, and that’s good enough.

6. NEVER grocery shop on an empty stomach

I make this mistake time and time again, and I end up buying a bunch of stuff we don’t need in the house, including a few unhealthy choices. Rather postpone the grocery shopping. By doing grocery shopping when you’re not hungry, you’ll make healthier choices, and save some money too.

7. DON’T skip your yearly gyno appointment

Especially if you’re sexually active, and ESPECIALLY if you’ve been sexually active with more than one partner.

8. Your home, your happy place

Create an environment at home that you enjoy, a place where you can relax, and a place that makes you feel happy. Personally I love a neat, decluttered home with tons of natural sunlight, especially in the mornings. This made apartment searching particularly hard for us.


9. Avoid tanning beds like the plague

I’ve done this tan-can thing at the local gym twice before, only to be disappointed, I didn’t want to do more, because I knew how bad it was for me. So I was white as milk on my wedding day because I refuse to use a tanning bed. It’s super bad for you, and you’ll only see the damage when you’re older. Your older self will thank you for skipping it.

10. Never let Google diagnose you

It has diagnosed me with heart disease and diabetes before. Luckily I’m fit as fiddle, and Google was wrong.

11. Get enough sleep

Simple as that. If you struggle to fall asleep, take a warm bath or shower, it calms the nerves and and relaxes the muscles, making your body calm, and making it easier to fall asleep.

12. Don’t drink 8 glasses of water a day

Yip, you read that right. Your body signals you what it needs, if you force yourself to drink a lot of water, your body will lose all of its salts and minerals, and that’s a bad thing! Your body will let you know when it’s thirsty. I try to drink 500ml to 750ml of water a day, and I feel hydrated and happy.

13. SPF and hats

I have SPF in my handbag, and I wear sunblock every. single. day. I refuse to look like Biltong when I’m 40. Take care of your skin. If you’ll be spending a whole day in the sun, remember a hat!

14. Use a mask or scrub weekly

On top of your daily face routine, make sure that you take extra care. I recently learnt about charcoal face masks. My life is changed! You can purchase sachets of face masks at your local pharmacy like Dis-chem at a very affordable price.

And that’s all I’ve got. Exercise when you can, eat healthy when you can, but don’t torture yourself. It’s not worth it. Live a life you enjoy (cliche cliche). Have a great weekend!
